My Curly Hair Routine 2 Years Later . . .

Hi curl friends!

It’s been 2 years since I published my first curly hair routine!  2 years!  There have been changes in my regimen since then so I owe you guys an update! 🙂 For my new readers, here is the 411. . .

  • Hair Type: 3C
  • Hair Porosity: Low
  • Density: Medium with thick hair strands
  • Other hair features: naturally dry, frizzy
  • Frequency of wash days: once per week (end of week)
  • Climate: Tropical/ hot weather/ Humid

Now let’s dive in shall we! 🙂

1.DETANGLE

I usually wait until my wash day to detangle my hair. Here is how it is done:

  • Section hair in 4 quarters;
  • Begin to thoroughly soak hair and proceed to finger detangle/ gently work through with a wide tooth comb;
  • If my hair is seriously tangled, I would sometimes use a conditioner of choice, apply to wet hair and gently comb through with both my fingers and a wide tooth comb;
  • If I use the conditioner, I would detangle and then rinse out the conditioner thoroughly before I begin cleansing my hair.

The purpose of detangling on wet hair is to avoid/ reduce breakage and split ends that will stunt hair growth.

2. CLEANSE & CLARIFY

CLEANSE

For gentle cleansing I use sulfate free shampoo. My staple shampoo is the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo for thick, frizzy hair.  I would only do one (1) round of shampoo-ing with this for each wash day.  I have found that this shampoo does not strip my hair at all, leaving it super soft and actually helps detangle the hair while cleansing it.

CLARIFY

Once or twice a month – depending on styling products and product buildup – I would use a stronger sulfate free shampoo or a normal shampoo (containing sulfates) to thoroughly clarify my hair of all buildup and dirt, paying close attention to my scalp. Below are all the shampoos I have used recently for clarifying.  Again, I only do one (1) round of clarifying before moving to the next step of my regimen.

3. DEEP CONDITION

After shampoo-ing I go straight into deep conditioning.  Deep conditioning is something I stopped doing a while back and my hair suffered serious dryness as a result.   Since starting back, once a week, my hair styles better, maintains manageability and is more hydrated.

Check out the video  in this post to see how I deep condition, using one of my favourite deep conditioners!

These are my three (3) staple deep conditioners which work wonders for my curls in the humid Caribbean weather:

4. STYLE

This year I have really worked on simplifying my hair routine by using less products for styling.  Sometimes less is more and I can genuinely attest to that truth!  Below are all the products I have been using, as of late, to style:

After deep conditioning, I would apply my HCHG Flaxseed Creme Gel Work It! to each section and style accordingly.  I would then use a gel of choice for styling my baby hairs and for more sleek styles like a neat low/ high bun/ ponytail.

So that’s it guys! Simple but detailed. What’s your hair regimen like?  What products are your holy grails?

    1. Well firstly your hair is gorgeous. From what I saw you may have like type 3C like me or even 4a. Whether this process will work for you is all about experimentation and how your hair reacts to different products, product combinations and a host of other factors. It also depends on porosity of your hair i.e. how fast and how well your hair soaks up water and product and stays or leaves the hair. Are your hair strands really thick or thin? Is it naturally dry or oily? To learn about porosity I will direct to a great resource >>>>> https://www.naturallycurly.com/texture-typing/hair-porosity

      I can also message you privately if you want and we can work through it and try to figure it out 🙂 I know it is a lot to take in but you will learn your hair with time no worries ❤
